Trauma-Informed Teaching: Strategies to Support Teachers

Perhaps not surprising given the global events of the past two years, it is estimated that over half of all children around the world have experienced some sort of trauma. Trauma impacts brain development, learning, and behavior. Children who have undergone trauma are more likely to struggle with language, communication, problem solving, cause and effect relationships, attention and concentration, emotion regulation, and relationship development and maintenance with both peers and adults (Citizen, 2006). As such, it is imperative that teachers, especially teachers of students from refugee backgrounds, have skills in trauma-informed pedagogy in order to meet the needs of young learners for tomorrow’s world. Moreover, in supporting their students who have survived trauma, teachers are at risk for experiencing secondary trauma themselves. In this webinar we will share classroom strategies for supporting both students who have encountered trauma as well as tips for teachers to manage secondary trauma they may also experience.

Gina M. Petrie and Janine J. Darragh

Janine Julianna Darragh, PhD is Associate Professor of Literacy and English as a Second Language at University of Idaho where she instructs courses in ESL, English teaching methods, and young adult literature. Her research interests are sociocultural and social justice issues in teaching and learning, young literature, and teacher preparation. Her current scholarship centers on supporting teachers of learners who are culturally and linguistically diverse, teachers of refugees, and teachers in contexts of crisis.

Gina Mikel Petrie, PhD is Director of Global Student Services and Professor of English as a Second Language at Eastern Washington University. She received her M.A. TESOL from Indiana University and her doctorate from Washington State University. Her research explores the sociocultural contexts in which language instruction and teacher professional development occur. Her most recent work has been in Nicaragua with secondary English teachers exploring materials to support independent professional development. She has published and presented her work in the United States, Canada, Nicaragua, Italy, and Hong Kong.

English Language Teaching in Ukraine

In this webinar participants will learn about the Ukrainian educational system, which is organized into five levels: preschool, primary, secondary, upper secondary and postgraduate education and get acquainted with English Language Teaching at all levels.

TESOL-Ukraine Secretary Oksana Chugai has Ph.D. in Education, she is an Associate Professor of the Department of English for Engineering № 2, National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. She is a PTE Oral Examiner (Pearson Test of English), Cambridge-certified teacher (CELTA, TKT) and Independent External Testing Examiner; she has completed internships in the USA, Belgium and Germany. Oksana has more than 20 years of practical experience working as a teacher trainer and lecturer. She regularly takes part in TESOL-Ukraine, UERA and other international events. She is the member of the Editorial Board of Advanced Education Journal on issues of foreign languages teaching. Her main fields of interest are alternative assessment, distance course design, professional development of English teachers.
