Abstract: Biographical texts are not uncommon in textbooks for English language learners. Usually they are presented as a reading passage followed by comprehension and vocabulary exercises. However, biographies are rich teaching materials that can be used as a springboard to teach the four skills. This webinar will give ideas for how biographies intended as reading texts can be enhanced to practice other skills. It will also show how to build content-based units of instruction around biographies. Finally, there will be a brief look at courses based on biographies.
Bio: Sally La Luzerne-Oi has taught EFL/ESL and French in the U.S. Mexico, Venezuela, Portugal, Japan and Ukraine. She currently works independently on short-term assignments. She coauthored Tell Me About It! a listening and speaking textbook, and a number of chapters and articles. In 1994 she joined Zirka Voronka and other American instructors to provide a Summer Institute on Current Methods and Practices in TESOL held in Vinnytsia and Kharkiv. Little did she know that the Ukrainian teachers and their students would capture a piece of her heart! As a result, she returned to Ukraine for the 1995-96 academic year and four more summers. She is co-liaison for the Hawaii TESOL/TESOL Ukraine partnership.
