On December 12-13, 2024, TESOL-Ukraine hosted a remarkable teacher training series titled “Mastering the Craft: Writing Techniques and Insights from Professional Authors and Educators” in partnership with the Fulbright Ukraine Program at America House, Kyiv. This two-day event brought together educators from across Ukraine to explore innovative writing techniques, share best practices, and gain insights from seasoned professionals in the field.

The training was a resounding success, filled with engaging sessions, practical workshops, and networking opportunities. Attendees left inspired and equipped with new tools to bring creativity and purpose into their classrooms, empowering students to become confident writers.

Event Highlights

Day 1 – December 12, 2024

The first day began with a warm welcome from Olena Ilienko, TESOL-Ukraine President, and Liliia Shylo, Cultural Assistant from the RELO U.S. Embassy, Kyiv. Their opening remarks set the tone for a dynamic and collaborative event.

The session “The Hormone Effect: Capturing Minds and Hearts Through Stories” led by Olena Ilienko, Lilia Kuznetsova, and Maryna Tsehelska captivated the audience, demonstrating how storytelling can deeply engage learners.
Other sessions included:

  • “Story Circle Icebreaker and Other Activities” by Liudmyla Sinna, which offered practical activities for fostering creativity and collaboration.
  • “Collaborative Strategies for Teaching Writing” by Yuliia Korobova, emphasizing group dynamics and purposeful activities.
  • “Fiction Text: What Is Hidden Behind” by Olena Halapchuk-Tarnavska, unveiling the layers of meaning in storytelling.
  • “The Power of Place: Stories Told for a Purpose” by Lyudmyla Hnapovska, highlighting the significance of setting in narratives.

Day 2 – December 13, 2024

Day 2 began with an inspiring presentation from Serhiy Zaitsev of Fulbright Ukraine, sharing opportunities for Ukrainian educators.

A tour of America House and a coffee break provided participants with a chance to recharge and connect.

Highlights included:

  • “Integrated Storytelling-Based Creative Methodologies” by Hanna Podosynnikova, showcasing innovative approaches to storytelling.
  • “The Set of Tools for Digital Storytelling” by Bohdana Saliuk, offering practical digital resources for engaging lessons.
  • “Enhancing Language Teaching with Real Images and Capturing Culture Through Photos” by Nataliia Pyliachyk, Iryna Malyshivska, and Olha Bilyk, which demonstrated the power of visuals in language education.
  • “Making Writing Your Favourite Skill” by Svitlana Batsmai, inspiring educators to reimagine writing as a joyful skill.

The event wrapped up with a heartfelt closing ceremony, celebrating the success of the series and the commitment of all participants to advancing English language education in Ukraine.
