TESOL-Ukraine Teacher Development Spring 2024

Session 1 – January, 26, 2024

Presenter: Professor/Dr. Andy Curtis, City University of Macau, SAR, China.

Title: Developing Intercultural Communicative Competence in the Foreign Language Classroom

Abstract: Jeff Beck (1944-2023) was an English musician who is known for the song “Hi Ho Silver Lining” which was released in 1967. The opening line of the song is: You’re everywhere and nowhere, baby” which could be a reference to the whole notion of “Culture”, as it might be said that “Culture” is also everywhere but nowhere in particular, making it both omnipresent but at the same time elusive. In this invited online webinar workshop for TESOL Ukraine, we will start by briefly considering what we mean by “Culture” in relation to “intercultural communication” especially as it relates to the foreign language classroom. We will also look at how discussions of “intercultural communication” have evolved over the years, from its earliest applications in the 1930s to the present day, and how foreign language teaching and learning can make use of pedagogical approaches related to the development of “intercultural competence.”

Session 2 – Friday, February 9

In this session, we further explored the intricacies of intercultural communication through a series of insightful presentations.

    • Presented by Dr. Olena Ilienko, Head of the Foreign Languages Department at O.M. Beketov National Urban Economy University in Kharkiv, and Maryna Tsehelska, Associate Professor at Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University.
  2. “An Insight into Negotiation Styles in Ukraine and the USA: Business English Class Perspective”
    • Presented by Alla Ishchuk, Associate Professor at Dragomanov Ukrainian State University.
  3. “Integrating Intercultural Learning in ESP Courses”
    • Presented by Iryna Zuyenok, Associate Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages of Dnipro University of Technology and the Director of the University Linguistic Centre.

Session 3 – February 29

Title: Creating Ecosystems of Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Topic: “Colligation and the Necessity of a Bottom-Up Approach to Grammar”

While the idea of collocation – words which often go with other words – has become commonplace in English Language Teaching, the concept of colligation – the grammatical patterns that frequently go with particular words – remains underexplored. Session 5 – March 29

Title: Creativity and Critical Thinking in the Foreign Language Classroom

In this invited online webinar workshop for TESOL Ukraine, we will start by briefly considering what we mean by “Creativity” and what we mean by “Critical Thinking” in the context of the language classroom. We will explore the similarities and the differences between these two concepts, which overlap but which are not the same, and neither of which may be possible without language. We will then look at the relationships between language and creativity and between language and critical thinking. Lastly, we will consider how language teachers and learners can work together to develop not only intercultural competence and ecosystems of language assessment but also creatively critical and critically creative ways of teaching, learning and using languages.

Presenter: David Marsh, PhD, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, the UK, Member of the EduCluster Finland Advisory Council and Director of MED, Finland.

Topic: Teaching & Learning Languages. New Trends, New Horizons, New Opportunities

This presentation will take you on a journey to explore Content and Language

Integrated Learning (CLIL). We focus on what CLIL is and what it is not, why it has become so significant for leading edge language educators, and how it can be realized. It is said that the ‘house of CLIL has many rooms’ so David will try to respond to comments in the chat function in the hope that participants will take away ideas that can inspire, strengthen, and sustain the joy of knowing what it means to live and work as an advanced languages professional.

Teaching is a demanding profession, even during times when day-to-day life is easy. It is a ‘giving’ profession which means that after a few years some of us need to re-energize ourselves. One way to do this is to explore new methodological pathways, learn more about why what we do well works, and go to work feeling inspired and zestful. This interactive presentation explores some new and emerging developments in language teaching and learning which may provide ideas and insights for our future journeys as educators interested in languages.
